History

Since its inception, Ars Flores has been regarded as a welcoming and friendly organization. Efforts such as post-concert receptions, season opening parties and the end-of-season fundraisers have brought the community to a closer and more participatory level. Musicians are encouraged to greet and hear audience comments after concerts as well as interact with patrons, guest artists and board members on a friendly level.

The quality and excellence of concerts is achieved by a constant review of musicians’ playing skills, which is based on evidence of diligent home-practicing before rehearsals. In addition, the standards of professional musicians are high, as they come from renowned ensembles such as The New World Symphony, Florida Grand Opera, and the former Florida Philharmonic, among others.

The repertoire is carefully selected by the artistic director, after reviewing audience surveys during strategic planning meetings with the board (which includes orchestra musicians). World renowned guest artists are featured, performing alongside Ars Flores Symphony musicians, not merely to the benefit of the musicians, but for Broward and Miami-Dade County audiences as well. Past featured performers  have included Washington DC’s Quintango, pianist Jeffrey Biegel (protégé of Leonard Bernstein), pianist Mei-Ting Sun (winner of 7th National Chopin Piano Competition) and violinist Leonid Sigal (former concertmaster of the Florida Philharmonic).  Jazz flutist Nestor Torres (Latin Grammy Winner) performed an innovative classical and jazz program, featuring world premieres of commissioned works. The concert was sold out, and a success. The Annual Concerto Competition has established a legacy among private teachers and music schools as well as secondary schools, and national universities and conservatories. Its popularity has grown over the last eight years, with applicants from as far away as Canada and California. This annual concert offers a unique opportunity to six talented young soloists to present their winning works accompanied by Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra. Past winners are currently attending the top schools in the country such as Juilliard, Yale, Indiana University and Peabody Conservatory.

The South Florida debut appearance of Mei-Ting Sun produced a sold-out performance and generated tremendous media exposure. Traditionally, past winners of the National Chopin Piano Competition would make their debut appearance with the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra.  Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra was the orchestra of choice in the region for this concert. This successful event was made possible thanks to an ongoing collaboration with the Chopin Council of Florida. Ars Flores welcomed back Mei-Ting Sun the following year and the results were again successful to both organizations, and in turn to Broward County.
