Leonid Sigal, Violin

Leonid Sigal has enjoyed a prominent career as recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestra leader. Since his early public performances, he was unanimously praised both by critics and audiences for his extraordinary talent, virtuosity and musical sensitivity. Born in Moscow, Russia, he began his violin studies at the age of 5 and, less then a year later, was accepted to the renowned Gnessin School of Music. He went on to attend the legendary Moscow Conservatory where he graduated with excellence.
Mr. Sigal was awarded Grand Prix at the Waldviertel International Music Festival in Austria, as well as top prizes at numerous national violin competitions in the former Soviet Union. In 1993 he received the Algur H. Meadows Artistic Scholarship Award in Dallas, which led to his participation in the prestigious International Artist Certificate performance program at the Meadows School of the Arts. Since that time the United States has become his new home.
Mr. Sigal’s performing experience includes numerous recitals, chamber music and orchestral appearances at concert halls in Italy, Germany, France, Russia and former Soviet Union, Great Britain, Austria, and Switzerland as well as in Japan and South Korea. Among the major festivals at which he has performed are the Evian Festival in France, Schwetzingen Music Festival in Germany, Miami’s “Mainly Mozart” Festival and chamber music festivals in Hamptons (NY), Tokyo, Prague, Cambridge (U.K.), Seoul and many others.
Being a very active and dedicated chamber musician he has enjoyed collaboration with such world- renowned artists as Isaac Stern, Mstislav Rostropovich, Vladimir Spivakov and Evgeny Kissin. Recent highlights include Bach’s Double Concerto with Joseph Silverstein and the Florida Philharmonic, and Bottesini’s Grand Duo with Edgar Meyer.
Associate Concertmaster of the Florida Philharmonic since 1999, Mr. Sigal previously was Concertmaster and Associate Conductor of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Chamber Orchestra. Then, in 1995 he joined the New World Symphony, where he was one of the concertmasters and was also coached in conducting by Michael Tilson Thomas. He has recently been appointed and now in his first season as an Artistic Director with the Miami Chamber Symphony.
